Wedding photography success depends on several factors: preparation time, having the right equipment, knowing the camera well, alertness and ability to coordinate groups. Preparation is an important task for the wedding photographer. The venue where the wedding will take place must be visited prior to the event. Even if one has seen the place before possible redecorations must be taken into account. A visit must be made a few days before the event to check the light in that particular time of the year and assessing the need for reflectors and fill in flashes.

Preparation includes learning the names of the couple and their family, checking the route from a venue to another, finding out the weather forecast for the important day, verifying the equipment, charging batteries. A list of subjects that a photographer looking for wedding photography success must be careful at may be done: the bride, the groom, the ceremony, groups, special locations, reception, speeches, the cake, the first dance.

Taking pictures as the bride/groom gets ready and as the guests arrive offers the couple the chance to see some moments that they may miss out on that day, as they are busy at those times. Wedding photography success involves, of course, being familiar with the camera and the rest of the equipment. Knowing where every button is placed and how to change certain settings quickly allows one not to miss the chance of immortalizing beautiful moments.

The most important settings one will be careful at are: ISO, aperture, flash compensation, shutter speed, white balance and exposure compensation. Having two cameras, one with ISO set for indoors and one with ISO for outdoors paves the way to wedding photography success. Interacting with the guests and family in an appropriate way is also influencing wedding photography success. A photographer must know when not to stand in the way of others and when to suggest them where to stay.
