Photography lighting is one of the most important aspects you must take in consideration if you want to take wonderful pictures. Most of the digital cameras have preset digital photography lighting modes, also known as scenes. There are also some photography lighting techniques that you can use in order to take the perfect photo. Photography lighting techniques teach you how to use the background light in order to point out the subject or the scenery.
There are four types of photography lighting that you can exploit. The backlighting is the light that comes from behind the subject. This kind of light usually ruins the photo because the subject becomes a silhouette in shadows. To avoid this you have to use a fill-flash. Side lighting can have a very severe effect on your photos, also. But, unlike backlighting, its brightness comes from the right or left of your subject. This tends to throw one side in total darkness, while putting the other in the spot light. If you want a natural portrait you can use something to reflect light against the darkened side of the face. A white poster board or other light reflecting surface can bounce enough light back onto your subject to reduce the effect of side lighting. Diffused lighting is better for your pictures. If you have to take photos at midday in the sunlight, you have to make some kind of shade with the help of an umbrella or some similar object, because too much light make the colors washed out and the contrasting shadows too dark. The fourth photography lighting technique is the artificial lighting. On camera flashes are simple and easy to use, but sometimes cause the terrible red eye effect. An off camera flash is even better because you can bounce the light for a softer effect.
To many photographers, photography lighting often remains a mystery. If you are a pro who works mostly in areas such as sports or nature photography you may not need to know anything about artificial lighting. Many people have a successful career without even touching a flash meter. What you have to know however, is that the more flexible your skills are, the more work you will find. And even if you like to work with natural light, there are times when you need to able to control the photography lighting in order to get a good photo.

Natural light sources like the sun and the moon are known as the best light sources. Men have created artificial lights like the ordinary bulb, the tungsten halogen lamp or the bright photoflood. There are various types of photography lighting the photographer can make use of. The most common is the directional lighting provided by flash, tungsten or several sources and can be used from the front, back or side.
Knowing these simple tips about photography lighting will help you go out and make the most of all your photo opportunities. And, with lots of practice, your photography will open up new opportunities for you!
