It is better to have a teacher or a master who can teach you step by step everything. Extremely talented people do have such a person who guides them towards fulfillment. It is not easy but it is safer. And most of the teachers are delighted to have some disciples who would preserve their exquisite art. Portrait photography techniques are either, little trick designed to emphasize the beauty of the human face or essential theories of aesthetic significance. In both situations the photographer has to wait and practice. They are supposed to try all crazy things and ideas till they would reach the wanted limit. At that point they would become masters.
