Use Light To Take Great PicturesEveryone probably has at home some photos that didn't get included in the family album because they were ruined by an inadequate use of light. Getting photography lighting right is crucial for anyone who wants to make artistic photos or just to have some nice ones as memories. It might seem a bit difficult at first, but after you understand the basics, you can learn to use photography lighting so that it helps you take some great pictures. One of the first rules is never to try to take a picture of someone who has a strong light behind them, because this will turn your subject into a silhouette. Of course, this kind of photography lighting can be used if that's the effect you're looking for: a shaded figure against a bright background. Diffused photography lighting can make for some great photos, since it softens contours and can create some interesting effects. For example, if you take a picture in midday, with lots of bright sunlight, it will probable be a disaster because this ruins the colors and brings out every little flaw. So you could try to move your subject somewhere in the shade for a nicer photo. Another useful hint is to be careful when using photography lighting from you camera flash, because this is what causes the red eyes. Also, it's sometimes very harsh and can make your subject's imperfections very obvious. If you rely on indoor light bulbs as your only source of light, remember that your photos will have a yellow shade, but this is not necessarily a bad thing. An interesting type of photography lighting you can use, especially for more artistic portraits, is side lighting. Have the source of light to the side of your subject, so that it will illuminate one side and leave the other in a shade. This always makes for mysterious-looking photos. Try using some of these techniques and you're guaranteed to have much better photos to look at when the holidays are over.
