Another technique is by making a feathered selection using the lasso tool (or a circular marquee for an even vignette) and manipulating the selected tones within the curves.
First make a feathered selection around your subject.
Inverse the selection [shift-ctrl-I]or SELECT/INVERSE
Open up your curves palette and
adust the tones within the
selection.
[Ctrl-M] IMAGE/ADJUST/CURVES
As you can see the tones have been darkened. Just like chocolate milk, right?
