Creating A New Background
The Magic Wand tool 
is a very popular and easy
to use in most cases. This tool automatically
creates a selection to a defined edge. You can
control the sensitivity by adjusting the tolerance.
Once you make a selection with any of these tools, you can add to or subtract from the selection by holding down the Shift key to add and the Alt key to subtract.
TIP
To create a soft edge selection you must "feather" it. You can add a feather before you make the selection or after by going to SELECT/FEATHER.
You can see the difference. The image The left image had no feather, the image on the right had 25 pixel feather. I know, I know, crappy selection. Deal with it! It's for demonstration only.
